Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 cup whole milk (warmed)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 2 large eggs
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1 tsp ground cardamom
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm milk and yeast; let sit until frothy (5 minutes). Stir in sugar, melted butter, eggs, orange zest, cardamom, and half of the flour until smooth.
  2. Gradually add remaining flour while kneading on a floured surface for about 8 minutes until smooth. Shape into a ball and let rise in an oiled bowl covered with plastic wrap for 1 hour or until doubled.
  3. Punch down the dough, roll it out into a rectangle, spread softened butter over it, sprinkle with a sugar-cardamom mix, roll tightly, and slice into equal pieces.
  4. Place cut sides up in greased pans; cover and rise for another 30 minutes while preheating the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown. Dust with powdered sugar before serving warm.
